Why Revisions Are Actually a Good Thing

When most people hear the word “revision,” they think something went wrong. Maybe the design missed the mark, or maybe the client wasn’t happy with the first draft.

After years of building websites, I’ve learned that revisions are actually one of the most valuable parts of the design process. (I’d be more concerned if there weren’t any revisions.)

The First Draft Is Rarely the Final Draft

Even with a detailed questionnaire, inspiration sites, and a clear vision, it’s nearly impossible to nail every detail on the first try. Sometimes a layout looks great in theory, but feels different once it’s actually built. Other times a client sees the design and realizes they want to take things in a slightly different direction. That’s completely normal.

The first draft is about creating a strong foundation. Revisions are where the refinement happens.

Clients Bring a Different Perspective

One thing I’ve learned is that clients often notice things I don’t, and vice versa.

I’ve spent hours staring at a design, so sometimes I’m too close to it. A client might point out something that seems obvious in hindsight, or they might have insight into their audience that I wouldn’t know otherwise.

The best websites usually come from a collaborative process where both sides contribute ideas and feedback.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Sometimes a revision is as simple as changing a button color, adjusting spacing, or moving a section higher on the page. These may seem like minor tweaks, but they can have a surprisingly big impact on the overall feel of the website.

I’ve had projects where a few small revisions transformed a good design into a great one.

Revisions Help Create Better Results

At the end of the day, revisions aren’t about criticism. They’re about improvement.

The goal isn’t to prove that the first draft was perfect. The goal is to create the best possible website. Every round of feedback helps refine the design, improve usability, and ensure the final product aligns with the client’s vision.
